Short answer. RenoCalc, a Canadian renovation cost publisher, gives a typical three-bedroom home three to five days with a professional crew. HomeStars counts 40 to 80 hours of crew time for the full interior of a 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft home. In one room, drying sets the clock more than painting does.
Prep, coats, colour, the age of the house and the season move those numbers. When you are ready to compare quotes for interior painting in Ottawa, see what the job covers and ask for a free written estimate.

What decides how long a room takes
Two rooms of the same size can finish a day apart. Six things make the difference, roughly in order of how much time they add.
The walls and the paint
- The prep the walls need. Nail holes, dents and cracks are filled with joint compound, which has to dry before it is sanded and primed. USG, the maker of Sheetrock compound, says a coat dries in about 24 hours at 21 °C and 70% humidity, and that each coat must be completely dry before the next. A crack that takes three coats takes days. That work is drywall repair and surface preparation.
- How many coats, and the wait between them. Benjamin Moore’s Regal Select data sheets give one hour to dry to the touch, then 1 to 2 hours before the flat can be recoated and 3 hours for the semi-gloss, measured at 25 °C and 50% relative humidity. Two coats on the ceiling, the walls and the trim stack those waits through the day.
- The colour change. Benjamin Moore recommends two coats of its topcoat for full colour development, and says certain custom colours need a tinted primer underneath. Going from a dark wall to a pale one, or the reverse, is where the extra coat appears.
The room itself
- Ceiling and trim in the scope. Sherwin-Williams paints the ceiling first so drips never land on finished walls, moves to the walls once the ceiling is dry, and leaves the trim for last. Each surface is its own pass with its own drying time.
- Plaster or drywall. The Glebe, Westboro and Centretown are largely plaster over lath. Benjamin Moore’s instructions are never to sand plaster, to knife off the high spots instead, and to prime before and after any patching compound goes on. That is two extra coats of primer around every repair.
- What is in the room. Furniture to shift and cover, pictures, shelves and switch plates to take down. A cleared room is masked and covered faster than a full one.
How the published times add up on one bedroom
Take a bedroom with sound drywall, a handful of nail holes, a colour close to the old one, and walls, ceiling and trim all in scope. The published times stack up like this:
- Cover the floor and furniture, mask the edges, fill the holes.
- Leave the compound to dry. At USG’s 24 hours, that is the first night.
- Sand and prime the patches, then two coats on the ceiling with Benjamin Moore’s 1 to 2 hour wait for flat between them.
- Two coats on the walls, cutting in and rolling each wall while the edge is still wet, the way Sherwin-Williams describes it.
- Two coats of semi-gloss on the trim and doors, 3 hours apart.
- Strip the masking, clean up, and walk the room with you.
So a room with any filling runs into a second day, because the compound dries overnight. A room with nothing to fill can be painted in one working day, which is where RenoCalc’s half a day to a day for the painting lands.

Why most of the time is drying, not painting
HomeStars says prep takes 30 to 50% of a painter’s time on site. The rest is the paint itself, and a good part of that is waiting between coats.
Dry, recoat and cure are three different clocks
Benjamin Moore’s Regal Select sheets give three separate times. Dry to the touch: one hour. Ready for the next coat: 1 to 2 hours for flat, 3 hours for semi-gloss. Ready to wash: “Painted surfaces can be washed after two weeks.”
So the room is fine to live beside that evening and not fine to scrub for a fortnight. All three times are measured at 25 °C and 50% humidity, and the same sheets say high humidity and cool temperatures make every one of them longer.
Ottawa in winter: keep every room on the list warm
Interior painting runs all year in Ottawa, because indoors the heating sets the conditions. The exception is a room that is not heated like the rest: a spare room with its vent closed, a sunroom, the cold end of a basement.
Benjamin Moore says not to paint when the air or the surface is below 10 °C. Leave the heat at its normal setting in every room being painted, and open the vents in rooms you usually keep cool.
Winter also seals the house. Benjamin Moore’s sheets ask for fresh air during application and drying, and Health Canada advises increasing ventilation when using paints. In January that means a fan and a window cracked for a few hours after each coat.
Older Ottawa homes take longer to prep
Health Canada says a home built before 1960 probably contains lead-based paint, and one built between 1960 and 1990 may have it outside and, in smaller amounts, inside. In the 2021 Census, 15.9% of the City of Ottawa’s occupied homes were built in 1960 or earlier and another 43.8% between 1961 and 1990 (Statistics Canada).
On original coatings that old, Ottawa Luxe Painting works without dry power sanding or heat guns, contains the work area and cleans up carefully. That is a method we follow, not a certification we hold, and it adds hours to the prep. Our page on lead-safe painting explains what changes.
How long a whole interior takes
RenoCalc gives a typical three-bedroom home three to five days with a professional crew, and roughly double that for a homeowner doing it alone. HomeStars counts 40 to 80 hours of crew time for a full interior on a 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft home. How many calendar days that becomes depends on the size of the crew and on how much prep the walls and ceilings need.
You can stay at home for most of it. We work room by room, contain dust and protect floors and furniture as we go, and on a larger job we plan the order of rooms with you so the disruption to your day stays small.
A condo or apartment runs a little differently, because the building is shared. Tell us whether the board or property manager needs notice and what the building rules are, and we schedule around both.
When to book it
Interior work has no season in Ottawa. The exterior season is short and books up first, so the cold months are a good time for the inside of a house, and RenoCalc notes that painters are less busy from November to February. If you are planning the outside too, the best time to paint in Ottawa sets out the months for each.
How to get a lived-in Ottawa home ready for painters
The crew handles the masking, the covering and the clean-up. These jobs are yours, and each one saves time on the day.
Before paint day
- Settle the colours first. RenoCalc’s timeline gives colour selection 1 to 3 days on its own. Try samples on the wall, in the room’s own light, before painting day. Colour consultation is one of our services if you want help.
- Clear the small things: pictures, shelves, ornaments, and anything on dressers and window sills. We send a short prep note with your booking that lists them.
- Tell us about the big pieces. We move what we reasonably can, and for larger pieces we tell you ahead of paint day what we need from you, so the room is ready when we arrive.
- Sort out access: pets, the alarm code, parking, and in a condo the elevator booking and the board’s notice rules.
On paint day and the two weeks after
- Plan where everyone sleeps. Ask for bedrooms to be painted early in a day so they air out before night. Health Canada lists children, seniors, pregnant people and people with asthma among those most at risk from indoor VOCs, so give them a room that was not painted that day.
- Keep the heat on and plan fresh air: normal room temperature everywhere on the list, and a window you are happy to crack after each coat.
- Go gently for two weeks. Benjamin Moore says its walls can be washed after two weeks. Until then, leave a mark rather than scrub it.
You get a realistic timeline in writing with your estimate, worked out from the size and condition of your actual rooms. The estimate is free and itemized, jobs are booked Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM, and we keep you updated as the work goes.
