Ottawa brick, and the window you get to work in
Ottawa's older core is largely brick, and that brick freezes and thaws all winter, so breathability here is structural rather than decorative. The City of Ottawa's Centretown and Minto Park heritage district plan makes the point in its mortar section: cement mortar prevents moisture escaping and causes brick damage, so it asks for lime-based mortar on historic masonry. The same plan calls painting historic brick or stone not appropriate in those districts, while listing re-painting previously painted masonry, or a colour change, as work needing no heritage permit. Whether your brick is already painted therefore matters more than the colour you picked. Season is the other limit: these finishes need a warm, dry stretch to cure, so exterior brick work runs late spring to early fall.

What does brick painting & limewashing cost in Ottawa?
Brick pricing moves on a few things, and colour is not one of them. Wall area and storey count come first, because height means staging or lift access. Then masonry condition: chalking, efflorescence, moss or a failing previous coating all add cleaning before a coat goes on, and open mortar joints have to be dealt with rather than covered. Limewash is hand-worked labour where paint is a coats-and-coverage job, and porous brick simply absorbs more material. Your written estimate is itemized, so you can see which driver is moving it.
On masonry the product category matters more than the brand. Breathable mineral coatings, limewash and silicate systems let a wall dry outward, which is what a freeze-thaw climate asks for. Heavy film-forming coatings look solid on day one but can hold water behind them, and on brick that shows up later as spalling and peeling. Limewash itself is slaked lime and pigment, which is why it bonds into masonry rather than sitting on top.

Brick Painting & Limewashing: common questions
Effectively yes. Once brick carries paint it has to stay painted and be maintained on a cycle, because stripping paint off masonry is slow, costly and hard on the face of the brick. If you want the option to change your mind, limewash is the forgiving route.
Both are measured in years, not seasons, and preparation decides it more than the product does. Paint fails first where water gets in behind it: open mortar joints, failed caulking, or a sill shedding water into the wall. Limewash does not peel, it weathers.
Not every wall suits it. Limewash needs porous, absorbent masonry to bond into, so it will not take on brick that is already painted or sealed. The finish is deliberately uneven, which some people love and some do not, and it lightens as it weathers.
No, and that is where most failed brick jobs start. The wall has to be clean, sound and dry first: chalking, moss and efflorescence washed off, crumbling joints dealt with, then drying time. Sand blasting is the wrong way to clean it, because it opens up the face.
Ask the City first, because the answer often turns on whether the brick is already painted. It can be. Health Canada's guidance is that a home built before 1960 probably contains lead-based paint, and that on a home built between 1960 and 1990 the exterior may. That covers painted trim, sills and previously coated masonry, not bare brick. We use lead-safe practices where older coatings are disturbed, and Health Canada is explicit that sanders, heat guns and blowlamps are the wrong tools.
